Vijaya’s passion lies in developing community based pro-poor approaches for environmentally sustainable economic development in India. Before starting UTMT, she worked in World Bank, KFW, European Commission, DFID, and the Aga Khan Foundation primarily on livelihood and natural resource management. She has a Bachelor’s in International Relations and Women’s Studies from Mount Holyoke College, USA and a Masters in Regional planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Besides helming UTMT, Vijaya tries to be the best possible mom to her 7 year old and catch up on her reading.
What does UTMT business is all about?
UTMT procures honey from beekeeper farmers. Sourced honey is tested, certified, packaged and labeled in a production plant. They sell wide variety of honey products like Certified organic honey, Himalayan flora, Desert Bloom, Litchi, Wild Forest Honey.
UTMT rented the premises in industrial area of Mumbai. The well packaged products are sold online.
UTMT packaged product is delivered to hundreds of shops in Mumbai and Bangalore city.
They also started selling to B-2-B partners like Taj Hotels etc. Recently they tied up with Nature’s basket to supply NCR Region.
How are the products priced?
The honey products are priced between Rs 160 to Rs 350 per bottle (200 grams to 500 grams). Interested can make order online at utmt.in/order.
In the next couple of years they want to have presence across India. Current turnover is Rs 60 Lakhs.
There also promote products with special schemes for corporates so that they gift them to their employees or to individuals who can gift them to their friends or relatives. They give away 10% of the sale proceeds to UTMT society Bees for poverty reduction initiative so that it would continue to train poor farmers in beekeeping and help improve their livelihoods.
